The change in emphasis

From personal capability to responsibility for a group

Leadership is not about being loud or taking unnecessary risks. It is about noticing early, communicating clearly and making steady decisions that give other paddlers a safe and enjoyable day.

This stage may suit you if…

You are ready for greater responsibility

  • You are comfortable paddling in a range of coastal conditions
  • Your personal boat handling and rescue skills are dependable
  • You want to improve route choice and group movement
  • You lead informally and want to do it more thoughtfully
  • You are considering a Paddle UK leadership pathway

Not sure you are ready?

Development comes before assessment

You do not need to arrive seeing yourself as a finished leader. You do need sufficient personal skills to create space for group responsibility.

If personal control still absorbs most of your attention, Development or focused private coaching may be more useful first.

What leadership development explores

Make earlier, clearer and more proportionate decisions

The exact work depends on the group, conditions and course purpose. All delivery remains within the appointed coach’s Paddle UK qualification remit.

1

Planning & route choice

Use forecasts, tides, group information and alternatives to shape an appropriate day.

2

Group movement

Position, communicate and create simple systems that help the group travel well.

3

Dynamic decisions

Notice change early and adjust the plan before small issues become large ones.

4

Incident prevention

Manage pace, spacing, exposure and individual needs with quiet attention.

5

Practical leadership

Use rescues, towing and group support as part of an overall response when appropriate.

6

Reflective judgement

Explain choices, receive direct feedback and build a clearer picture of readiness.
