Remote First Aid Course

The Remote First Aid course is delivered by REAL First Aid Ltd and hosted by Sea Kayak Academy for paddlers and outdoor practitioners who spend time in remote or wilderness environments where immediate medical help may not be available.

The course is practical and scenario-based, with training designed to reflect real outdoor contexts — making it particularly relevant for sea kayakers, coaches, and expedition paddlers.

The course meets the first aid requirements for outdoor National Governing Body qualifications, including British Canoeing, Mountain Training, RYA, and others.

Who This Course Is For

This course is suitable for anyone who works or plays far from help and needs appropriate first aid skills for remote environments.

What the Course Covers

This two-day course focuses on the initial treatment of injuries and illnesses in remote settings, drawing on current evidence and best practice.

  • Scene assessment and casualty management in remote locations

  • Managing trauma and medical emergencies far from help

  • Decision-making and casualty care over extended timeframes

  • Scenario-based practice to contextualise theory

Evidence & Standards

Course content is based on current guidance and best practice from recognised medical and advisory bodies, including:

  • UK Resuscitation Council

  • NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence)

  • JRCALC

  • Royal College of Surgeons – Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care

  • Wilderness Medical Society

Assessment & Certification

The course is continuously assessed with formative feedback throughout.

On successful completion, candidates receive a 16-hour Remote First Aid certificate valid for three years.

  • Daily hours: Typically 9:30am–5pm
