Paddle UK courses and awards provide a nationally recognised progression pathway for sea kayakers — from developing independent paddling skills through to leadership and coaching.

These courses follow Paddle UK syllabi and are designed to support sound decision-making, navigation, and leadership in real coastal environments. Use this page to explore the different award pathways and find the course that best matches your experience and goals.

Serious progression, properly delivered

All Paddle UK courses at Sea Kayak Academy are delivered by experienced sea kayak coaches and follow nationally recognised standards. Training and assessment are grounded in real coastal environments, with an emphasis on judgement, preparation, and good decision-making on the sea.

Independent Paddler Awards

These awards recognise the skills needed to plan and paddle independent sea kayak journeys in sheltered to moderate coastal environments, focusing on judgement, navigation, and self-rescue.

Sea-Kayak-Award

Sea Kayak Award (Paddle UK)

The Sea Kayak Award develops the skills required to paddle independently on the sea. You’ll focus on trip planning, boat handling, safety, and decision-making, giving you the confidence to manage your own coastal journeys.

Coastal Sea Kayak Award

Coastal Sea Kayak Award (Paddle UK)

Building on independent paddling skills, this award focuses on operating confidently in moderate coastal conditions. Training includes safety, rescue, and controlling your kayak in winds up to Force 4, surf up to 1m, and tidal flows up to 2 knots.

Advanced Sea Kayak Award (Paddle UK)

This award develops advanced paddling skills in dynamic environments such as tide races, overfalls, swell, and technical coastal terrain. It’s aimed at experienced paddlers who want to master their kayak in demanding conditions.

 

Sea Kayak Leadership Awards

Leadership awards focus on leading groups safely on the sea, managing risk, making decisions for others, and delivering enjoyable days in a range of coastal conditions.

Sea Kayak Leader (Tidal) Training (Paddle UK)

Training for paddlers working towards the Sea Kayak Leader award. You’ll develop leadership, safety, rescue, and group management skills in moderate tidal environments.

Assessment for the Sea Kayak Leader award, delivered in a supportive and realistic environment. The focus is on providing safe, well-managed, and enjoyable days for those you lead.

Advanced Sea Kayak Leader (Tidal) Training (Paddle UK)

In-depth training for paddlers preparing for the Advanced Sea Kayak Leader award. This course refreshes and develops the skills required for assessment but does not include the ONTP course.

Assessment for the Advanced Sea Kayak Leader award. We aim to make the assessment environment as natural and supportive as possible, allowing you to focus on leading effectively in demanding coastal conditions.

Sea Kayak Coaching Awards

Coaching awards are designed for paddlers and instructors who want to coach others safely and effectively in coastal environments.

Training for paddlers looking to coach club members or expand their professional qualifications. The course focuses on planning and delivering safe, enjoyable, and progressive coaching sessions on the sea.

Advanced coaching training for those working in more dynamic coastal environments. The focus is on coaching effectively while managing increased environmental and group complexity.

An in-depth classroom-based course covering coastal navigation, tidal planning, and weather forecasting. This course is a prerequisite for the Sea Kayak Leader (Tidal) assessment.

Remote First Aid

A non-award course supporting Paddle UK leadership and coaching pathways. Suitable for paddlers and instructors operating in remote coastal environments.

Additional support

Private coaching and guiding can be used to prepare for Paddle UK training or assessment, or to focus on specific skills outside formal award courses.
