A flexible, conditions-led assessment window designed to give you the best chance of being assessed in the right environment.

The Sea Kayak Leader Tidal Assessment is for paddlers who are ready to demonstrate leadership, judgement, and decision making in real tidal sea conditions.

At the Academy, we run this differently from a simple fixed-date assessment. Rather than compressing everything into a rigid block and hoping the weather lines up, we use a short assessment window. This gives the assessor time to see the right things in the right conditions, while keeping the week valuable and productive throughout.

That means some days may be used for assessment, while others may be used for planning, navigation, coaching, scenario work, or lower-pressure consolidation depending on the forecast and what the assessor still needs to see. The result is a calmer, more professional process and a far better chance of being assessed properly rather than rushed.

Who This Is For

This assessment is for paddlers who are already operating at Sea Kayak Leader level and are ready to be assessed in tidal sea conditions.

You should already be comfortable with:

  • leading small groups on the sea
  • journeying in tidal environments
  • personal paddling skills appropriate to the award
  • planning, decision making, and group management
  • working safely and effectively in moderate conditions

If you are not quite assessment-ready yet, we may recommend training, coaching, or joining one of our advanced coaching weeks first.

How the Assessment Works

Our Sea Kayak Leader Tidal Assessment runs as a 4-day assessment window rather than a tightly compressed fixed assessment.

This normally gives:

  • 2 core assessment days on the water
  • 2 flexible days to work with conditions, planning, navigation, scenario work, recovery, or anything the assessor still needs to see

This format helps us avoid the usual problems of rushed assessments, poor condition alignment, and last-minute scrambling. It also means the assessment can be run in a more realistic and professional way, with decisions based on the actual conditions rather than the calendar.

Why We Use an Assessment Window

Sea kayak leadership assessments depend on the assessor seeing the right evidence in the right conditions. Flat calm conditions may not show enough, while conditions that are too strong may not be appropriate either.

A window gives us the flexibility to use the best available days well and make sensible decisions across the block. For candidates, that usually means a better quality assessment experience, less pressure to force things into the wrong conditions, and more opportunity for good judgement to be seen naturally.

Advanced Coaching Group

“Alongside the assessment candidate, each week includes a small advanced coaching group.

These are competent paddlers joining a high-level coaching and journeying block which runs alongside the assessment. They are not simply there to make up numbers, but to take part in a valuable week in their own right. For many paddlers, this week sits just below assessment level and is often the step that bridges the gap into leadership and assessment.

At times, they may form part of the group environment within which the assessment candidate is being observed. This creates a more realistic leadership environment and a more worthwhile week for everyone involved.

What the Week May Include

Each week is shaped around the conditions and the needs of the group, but will typically include:

  • assessment journey days
  • route planning and decision making
  • navigation work
  • tidal planning
  • leadership scenarios
  • coaching and feedback
  • lower-pressure consolidation sessions when conditions are not right for assessment

Not every day needs to be a full-value assessment day for the week to be worthwhile. The aim is to create the right overall environment for the assessment to be completed properly.

Booking and Timing

Because these assessments work best when properly planned, we do not run them as fixed, pre-listed dates.

Instead, assessment windows are built around candidate availability and planned well in advance. This gives us time to schedule an appropriate window, build the right group around the candidate, and set the week up properly from the outset.

If you are interested in booking an assessment, the best approach is to contact us early so we can start planning a suitable window.

If Conditions Do Not Align Perfectly

Our assessment format is specifically designed to improve the chances of getting the right conditions within the window. That said, sea conditions cannot be guaranteed.

If the assessor is unable to see all of the required elements within the planned window, we will talk through the next step clearly and honestly. The aim is always to assess candidates properly, not to force an outcome or rush a decision.

Accommodation and Base

Assessments run from the Sea Kayak Academy in Pembrokeshire. Camping is always available on site for course participants, and there is sometimes also the option of staying in our holiday accommodation nearby, subject to availability.

This helps make the assessment week feel settled, practical, and easy to manage, especially for paddlers travelling from further afield.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the assessment?

Our Sea Kayak Leader Tidal Assessment runs as a 4-day assessment window.

Is it four full assessment days?

No. The block includes core assessment days plus flexible days that allow us to work with conditions and complete the week in a sensible, professional way.

Why not just run it as a fixed two-day assessment?

Because leadership assessments depend heavily on conditions. A slightly wider window gives a much better chance of completing the assessment properly and reduces the risk of rushed or compromised decisions.

Who is the advanced coaching group?

They are typically paddlers working towards Sea Kayak Leader level. They are competent paddlers joining the week as part of a high-level coaching and journeying block. At times, they may form part of the group environment within which the candidate is assessed.

Do I need to organise the other paddlers myself?

No. All booking and communication is handled by the office.

What if I am not quite ready yet?

That is common. Get in touch and we can advise whether training, private coaching, or an advanced coaching block would be the best next step.

Where does the assessment take place?

Assessments meet at the Sea Kayak Academy in Pembrokeshire, with paddling locations chosen according to conditions.
