Coastal Sea Kayak Award (Paddle UK)
Recommended for paddlers who are already comfortable undertaking independent coastal journeys and are looking to achieve the Paddle UK Coastal Sea Kayak Award.
This award builds on independent paddling skills, focusing on operating in more exposed conditions, managing tidal flows, and making sound decisions when journeys become more committing. It is suitable for paddlers who are already confident undertaking independent coastal journeys and who are looking to demonstrate the standard required for the Paddle UK Coastal Sea Kayak Award.
At the end of the course, paddlers performing at the required standard will be offered the Paddle UK Coastal Sea Kayak Award.
Is this the right course for you?
Sea kayaking isn’t about collecting awardsβit’s about becoming a safe, capable and confident paddler.
If, after chatting with you, we think another course would provide a better learning experience, we’ll always tell you.
Sometimes that means recommending a Development Course before an Award course. Other times it means suggesting private coaching or a longer programme.
Our goal is to help you progress at the right pace and enjoy every step of your sea kayaking journey.
If you’re unsure whether you’re ready for this course, get in touch. We’ll happily talk through your experience and recommend the most suitable option.
How the award is delivered
This course is delivered over two to five days, depending on experience, conditions, and learning pace. Training and assessment are integrated throughout the course, with decisions based on performance in real coastal environments.
Who is this course designed for?
This course assumes you already have a solid foundation in sea kayaking. It is not intended as an introduction to sea kayaking or coastal paddling.
Before attending, you should ideally be able to answer yes to most of the following:
- You have completed several coastal sea kayak journeys.
- You have experience paddling in winds up to around Force 4 and moderate sea states.
- You are confident launching and landing on open beaches, including through small surf where appropriate.
- You have practised assisted rescues and self-rescues in open water.
- You have experience planning and undertaking your own coastal journeys.
- You are looking to demonstrate and consolidate existing skills, rather than learn the basics of sea kayaking.
If you can’t answer “yes” to most of the points above, don’t worry. We’d much rather recommend a more suitable course than have you arrive on something that isn’t the best fit for your current experience.
If that sounds like you, the Coastal Sea Kayak Award is likely to be the right course.
