BEFORE YOU ENQUIRE

This is assessment—not a training course

You should already be operating consistently at Sea Kayak Leader level. The assessment gives an appropriately authorised provider the opportunity to observe your current performance against the Paddle UK standard.

Attendance does not guarantee the award. If more development is needed, you will leave with clear, constructive feedback.

You should already be comfortable with

  • Leading small groups in moderate tidal water
  • Planning journeys using forecasts, tides and alternatives
  • Managing pace, communication and group movement
  • Applying dependable rescues, towing and incident responses
  • Explaining and adapting your decisions as conditions change

WHY A FOUR-DAY WINDOW?

Use the best conditions—without forcing the assessment

The window creates room to select suitable assessment days around forecast, tide and group needs. It does not mean four continuous days of formal assessment.

01

Core assessment days

The provider observes leadership, personal performance and group management in the required environment.

02

Conditions flexibility

The strongest days can be used well rather than compressing evidence into unsuitable weather or water.

03

Useful supporting work

Planning, navigation, scenario work or lower-pressure consolidation may be used where appropriate.

THE WORKING GROUP

A realistic leadership environment

A small advanced coaching group may operate alongside the candidate. These paddlers join for a worthwhile coached week in their own right; they are not simply present to make up assessment numbers.

Where appropriate, they help create the genuine group environment in which leadership decisions can be observed.

The window may include

  • Assessment journeys and route choices
  • Tidal planning and navigation
  • Leadership scenarios and incident management
  • Coaching, feedback and reflective review

IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND

Conditions and outcomes cannot be guaranteed

The wider window improves the chance of seeing the required evidence in appropriate conditions, but the sea remains variable. No provider should force an assessment day or promise an award.

If every required element cannot be observed, the provider will explain what has been demonstrated, what remains outstanding and the most useful next step.

All activity is delivered within the appointed provider's current Paddle UK qualification remit and authorisation.
