Paddle UK personal performance award
Advanced Sea Kayak Award
For highly experienced sea kayakers ready to bring boat control, planning and judgement together in advanced coastal environments—and, where the required standard is demonstrated, gain the recognised award.

A demanding next step
Advanced paddling is about judgement, not bravado
This award connects refined boat handling with calm decisions in tide races, overfalls, surf, swell and exposed coastline. The exact course plan adapts to experience, group needs and suitable conditions.
A good fit if you…
Already paddle confidently in moderate water
- Have extensive sea kayaking experience in moderate coastal conditions
- Are comfortable in wind, waves and tidal flow
- Can roll reliably and manage rescues in moderate conditions
- Usually hold the Coastal Sea Kayak Award or paddle at an equivalent level
- Want your advanced decision-making and performance observed
Important to understand
The award is not automatic
Training and observation are integrated, but attendance alone does not guarantee the award. The current Paddle UK standard must be demonstrated in suitable advanced conditions. If further development would help, you will leave with clear, constructive feedback.
What you will develop
Control, awareness and decisions in advanced water
Skills are coached and observed in real coastal contexts rather than treated as isolated tests.
Advanced boat control
Efficient techniques and coping strategies for wind, surf, swell, tidal flow, tide races and overfalls.
Planning & navigation
Weather, tide and coastal effects, chart work, open crossings and accurate deck-top navigation.
Dynamic coastlines
Rock-hopping and choosing safe, purposeful lines around exposed coastal features where conditions allow.
Rescue systems
Complex peer rescues, towing, self-rescue and reliable rolling appropriate to the environment.
Risk management
Recognising consequence, maintaining options and making sound decisions in committing environments.
Independent performance
Bringing the whole picture together while operating responsibly within the award remit.
