Details & Itinerary
The sea is a dynamic and exposed environment and changes like fog or an increase in conditions can appear as if from nowhere.
It is important for us as sea kayakers to know where we are at all times so that we are able to easily navigate back to safety. It’s also important to be able to identify our current location should we need to let someone know where we are.
In this course, we start the day in our training room going over the basics of OS maps and navigation techniques relevant to sea kayaking at this level.
We’ll then take our maps out onto the sea and spend the day applying these invaluable skills in a real environment.
What we will cover:
- Identifying key features on OS maps
- Predicting where conditions may
- Change based on the topography of
- Where we’re paddling
- How to use a compass
- Taking and paddling on a bearing
- Navigating back to safety in low visibility
- Pinpointing your location on the map
- Providing a grid reference for your location
What you should bring:
Essential:
- Lunch is not provided, please bring your own packed lunch and any other snacks you require for the day/course (in a suitable container to be taken on the kayaks i.e plastic food container)

Want to know why we’re operating this way?
We have many years of experience in the kayaking world and we have all been frustrated when we book a course and make plans around it, only to be told shortly before that the course will not be running due to low participant numbers.
We want to be as customer-focused as possible. We have committed to running all courses even if only one person has booked.
Yes, this does mean we are operating at a loss in these instances, but we think you’ll be so impressed with the service we offer that you will be returning and bringing friends with you in the future!
And it’s a day out at sea doing something that we are passionate about, so we all win!
