Advanced Sea Kayak Award (Paddle UK)

The Paddle UK Advanced Sea Kayak Award recognises the skills required to paddle sea kayaks independently in advanced coastal environments.

This award focuses on operating in tide races, overfalls, swell, and exposed coastline, requiring high levels of judgement, control, and decision-making. It is suitable for experienced sea kayakers who are already comfortable in moderate conditions and want formal recognition of their ability to paddle in more committing environments.

At the end of the course, paddlers performing at the required standard will be offered the Paddle UK Advanced Sea Kayak Award.

How the award is delivered

This course is delivered over two to five days, depending on experience, conditions, and learning pace. Training and assessment are integrated throughout the course, with decisions based on performance in real coastal environments.

Previous experience required

Participants should have extensive sea kayaking experience in moderate coastal conditions. Paddlers should be confident managing themselves and their kayak in wind, waves, and tidal flow, and comfortable rolling in moderate conditions.

Paddlers will typically already hold the Paddle UK Coastal Sea Kayak Award or be paddling at an equivalent level.

Location & paddling conditions

The course begins in our purpose-built classroom. Paddling locations and objectives are selected on the day to suit weather, sea state, tidal conditions, and the goals of the group.

The award is delivered in advanced coastal environments, including exposed headlands, tide races, overfalls, swell, and surf, with conditions chosen to allow paddlers to demonstrate sound judgement and control.

What the course covers
